15/52: Get Pushed R2



For round 21 of Get pushed, I was paired with talented "k4♥wea". I suggest that you check out her stream for a great collection and some amazing flower closeups.

After exchanging a few emails, we agreed to do a common challenge. I was planning to do a vintage ad for the weekly theme of my 52 weeks project. she found the idea interesting and agreed to do the same. Here is my result.

I wanted to pick an old, obsolete item and create an ad that you could have seen in a newspaper sometime in the past. Maybe the 70's or 80's. I have very few items that fit the bill. It happened that in the last few hours of the week, as we were getting back from dinner, we found on our next door neighbor's lawn an old TV with a note on it that said, simply, "Free". You can guess the rest of the story.

The post-processing fits with the original idea I had, which is a newspaper ad. Actually, at some point I was going to try to create the newspaper page complete with the name and date. I might still try to do something like that in the future.

For "Get Pushed" Round 18, I was paired with Barbara [http://www.flickr.com/photos/8543109@N02/] who has a pretty good photo stream that I suggest you check out. Her challenge for me was as follows:

"I would like you to make an abstract photograph that makes people forget to ask "what is it, anyway?" One that people appreciate for its form and color and composition without regard for the original subject. I only had to fix a couple of things:

That was really challenging. I did not want to go the obvious route of macro, which I've done before. I also wanted to go with something colorful and maybe some motion like in the example I've been given. The final photo actually developed gradually as I was testing different ideas so this was not my original thought. I don't think there is a risk of figuring out what the actual item(s) are and most likely they won't mean anything to most people since they are technical "objects" I deal with in my work. I also wanted to include a photography technique and not just a do a routine simple shoot with a little editing.

So, this quadtych is composed of 3 colorful elements that are related to my work, and would be abstract to most people on their own, plus a B&W photo close up of a natural elements that also would qualify as abstract on its own. I combined the four in a quadtych, displayed the image in full screen on my computer monitor and then took another photo of it with a slow-shutter-zoom technique. The result came out looking like a "space jump". To me, although it looked different than the movie, it reminded me right away of the "2001: A Space Odyssey" stargate sequence.
